Every seventy-two minutes a family receives the heartbreaking news that a loved one has been
diagnosed with blood cancer. In many instances, a stem cell donation is one of the chances of
providing a cure to patients. Only a third of patients find a matching donor in the family. The
majority relies on a perfect stranger to save their life.
It was on the above basis and having had various discussions with DKMS Africa, that Corporate
Attorney and Social Activist partnered with DKMS Africa in 2022 to raise awareness around the
work DKMS Africa is doing regarding giving hope to patients diagnosed with blood cancer.
“It was a shock to learn that statistically, Blacks, Coloured, Indian and Asian patients have a
19% chance of finding a matching stem-cell donor when compared to 75% of White patients.
This spoke of a need to bring awareness on the real racial differences associated with the right
to health as enshrined in our Constitution,” said Tumi Sole, Founder and Creator of RunningWithSoleAC.
“We have seen a positive impact with regards to awareness from our relationship with Tumi
Sole. DKMS Africa is thus excited to announce an extension of our partnership with
RunningWithSoleAC to broaden its reach. This is part of DKMS Africa’s education and
awareness efforts relating to blood cancer and the need to register more diverse blood stem cell
donors,” explains Palesa Mokomele, Head of Community Engagement & Communications at
DKMS Africa.
“The DKMS Africa partnership speaks to the club’s growing impact and its CSI pillar and we are
very excited to be able to assist DKMS Africa in such an impactful manner,” adds Sole.
